Cyanotypes is an early photographic printing process used to create ‘blue prints’.  It is a solution of iron salts, using UV light to create a Prussian blue image. Basically if you brush the iron salts on a piece of paper and put a leaf on the paper and leave it in the sun, the solution exposed to the light will change colour, but when you remove the leaf, you will have an imprint where the UV was blocked by the leaf.

Natalie’s course explores the use of cyanotypes in art, by experimenting with colours, created using different ratios of the solutions, adding salt, lemon juice and vinegar.  Natalie pushes the effects further by adding pigment and ink.  It is a very useful course to get organic patterns and textures that can be used as inspiration to develop further artwork.
